RYA Sailing Courses

From Novice to Yachtmaster

We run the full range of RYA sail cruising courses, up to Yachtmaster Offshore level. Whether you are a first-timer wanting to be a useful crew member, or an experienced skipper who’d like to expand your skills or obtain an RYA/MCA Yachtmaster certificate, we can provide the right course for you.

You can enter our programme at any level, provided you have the correct pre-course of experience. But please be realistic when assessing your abilities and if you are in any doubt, please don’t hesitate to discuss your requirements with us before choosing your course.

Our practical courses are normally run on a stand-alone, live aboard basis, as detailed below, but they can be taken as part of a longer sailing holiday, or combined with a shore-based, theory course, to give a mix of onshore/offshore elements. On-line courses are also available for pre-course preparation and tailored packages can be arranged on request.

Onboard Practical Courses

Most of our practical courses are five day live aboard courses, which is the the RYA’s recommended minimum duration for most practical courses. However, many people opt for a six or seven day course, to provide more time for truly comprehensive tuition and practice, whilst also providing some time for leisure activities in this fascinating part of the World.

Two week, combined theory and practical courses are also available, with time spent both onshore and offshore.

Courses can be taken on a 'Join-In' basis, sharing the boat and all the chores with other students, or on a 'Master Class' private charter basis, where you have exclusive use of the boat for greater privacy and more personal tuition, and with the option to have our Thai cook on board to take care of all the galley work and help with general crew duties (highly recommended!).

Start Yachting

An introduction to sailing for complete newcomers. This course can be done as a two day, stand-alone course or as part of a longer sailing holiday. It can also be combined with the two day, shore based Essential Navigation and Seamanship theory course, to make an ideal, four day introduction to sailing.

Competent Crew

Comprehensive training for beginners wanting to become active crew members.  A course that can be done over five or seven days and which also fits well as part of a sailing holiday. The two day, shore based Essential Navigation and Seamanship theory course can also be included if required to make this into an excellent, seven day introduction to sailing.

Day Skipper

Ideal for sailors with some yachting experience and navigation knowledge who want to develop their skippering ability. This course can be combined with the Day Skipper theory course to form a two week, onshore/offshore, theory and practical course.

Coastal Skipper

Advanced skippering techniques for experienced sailors with a good knowledge of navigation and seamanship. This course can be combined with the Coastal Skipper theory course to form a two week, onshore/offshore, theory and practical course.

Yachtmaster

An RYA Yachtmaster certificate of competence is often the ultimate aim of many skippers. It is recognised Worldwide as a highly respected qualification and commercial endorsements can be added for professional use. We offer a 7 day, Yachtmaster exam preparation and exam course.

Shore-Based Theory Courses

Each of our RYA practical courses is complemented by a navigation and seamanship theory course, which is designed to equip you with enough theoretical knowledge to take charge of a yacht after some practical training. These courses are usually done onshore, as advance preparation for an onboard practical course. Each course  can be done online or in the classroom, either as a stand alone course, or as part of a combined theory and practical course.

Online courses are delivered by Skippers Online, one of the top rated RYA Training Centres specialising in online training. These courses can all be done at your own pace, in the comfort of your own home. Please scroll down for course details.

All our courses can be tailored to suit individual requirements, details are available on request.
